NetraBasti

Would you like to relieve eye strain, improve your vision, or pacify the doshas in your head area? the eyes are the gateway to one of the most treasured senses, attention was given to their care and the preservation of sight. The special technique for eye care is called Netra Basti. Netra means "eyes" and basti is the Sanskrit word meaning "to bathe" or "cleanse."

In this treatment, the eyes are bathed in plain or medicated warm, clarified butter called "ghee". This is accomplished by surrounding the eye socket with a ring of dough, which makes a well to hold the ghee over the eye. The ghee is allowed to sit on the eye for approximately 20 minutes. During that time dust, dirt, mucus and substances trapped in the eyes that a person has been unaware of can surface in the liquid ghee.

Besides this cleansing aspect, Netra Basti is also nutritive. Gazing through a warm ghee solution is said to have a nourishing effect on the optic nerve and the nervous system. It is used therapeutically under medical supervision for any number of eye complaints, but it has beneficial side effects from a beauty standpoint. It seems to relax not only the eye area but the whole face. The eyes themselves sparkle and the inner sensation is one of "gentle seeing," a pleasure similar to gazing over a gentle sea to the horizon. Fine lines as well as puffiness in the eye area are eased, along with inflammation and dryness of the eye and the skin around the eye. When Netra Basti is offered, it should be administered as the last in any series of treatments.

The client should be provided space and time to ground themselves and be instructed to avoid any stressful situations immediately afterward. Encourage your client to give themselves a minimum of two hours quiet time away from the stresses of bright lights, loud noise, crowds or emotional confrontations. This process opens the field of vision, allowing impressions to flow deep into the visual memory banks. Let these impressions be pleasant ones.
